Thankfully the wind relented for the second day of MotoGP tests at Cheste, allowing the riders to lap in ideal conditions throughout the day. This was sure to be the most demanding of the three days, given that the track was open from 10am right through to 5pm, although the majority of action took place between 11 and 4, when the track was at its warmest. For the second day the MotoGP machines shared the track with the new Moto2 prototypes that will replace the 250cc class in 2010.
Aspar Team rider Héctor Barberá returned to the track at 10.45 for his second day on board the Ducati Desmosedici. The youngster from Dos Aguas rode relentlessly until 16.20, racking up an incredible 100 laps. Héctor completed seven runs, the shortest one being just five laps and the longest almost reaching race distance at 23. His fastest lap time came on his sixth run – a 1′34.206 that was one of five laps in the 1’34s.
Héctor Barberá 1.34.206 (100 laps):
“I had the bike more under control today and everything was easier. Today I really noticed how much greater the physical demands are on one of these bikes compared to a 250 but I managed 100 laps so I am really happy as well as really tired. We still want to lower our lap times but we’re improving every day so I hope we can continue to work as well as this tomorrow. My first impressions of the Ducati are really good. Today we worked on the power delivery and I gradually adapted more and more to the bike, which I am liking more every day. I have a very good crew and they are helping me a lot, but we need to keep up the hard work tomorrow and I’m sure I’ll adapt even more. We haven’t changed much on the bike over the past two days, just little details like the riding position, handlebars and that kind of thing. I have been making sure I take two or three laps to get heat into the tyres and build my confidence up, rather than risking a crash. In general I have adapted well to the bike so far and I love the feeling with the front end so I think I can develop a good relationship with the Ducati.”
