At 10.30am -immediately following the MotoGP warmup for the Spanish Grand Prix- Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’ received much-merited recognition from the Circuito de Jerez. The former rider and now successful team manager across all three World Championship classes received a personal honour from the circuit, who have named corner number eight ‘Aspar’ in tribute. The announcement was made by Jerez Mayoress Pilar Sánchez, Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, FIM President Vito Ippólito and Jerez Circuit Director and Manager Juan Álvarez & José Ramón García. After being driven to the corner, Aspar received the surprise of a sculpture that will remain at the turn.
The metal monument is the work of Manuel González Pazo, and combines a crown, ‘Aspar’s number five from his riding days, a globe and a replica of his trademark helmet design. A commemorative plaque completes the tribute.
Following the presentation, those in attendance held a quick photo opportunity, before making way for the start of the 125cc race.
Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’:
“Without a doubt, to have a corner named after me at the Circuito de Jerez is an enormous honour. Especially as here has always felt like home. People here have treated me very well, the fans have been fantastic in their support… I have only good things to say about the people of Jerez. I am excited, because this recognition is part of my history and of my life, so I will never forget this great day. It is difficult to express all that I feel at this moment, but it is important to continue making history. Twenty-three years ago I raced here for the first time in a Grand Prix, and I have taken five wins as a team manager from since 2002. I would like to thank the Mayoress of Jerez, Pilar Sánchez, Circuit Director Juan Álvarez and Dorna, as it is because of them that this corner takes my name. I also thank all the fans who have taken me into their hearts for such a long time, and to all the riders who have passed through my team and have built its fame through their victories.”
